Damage to your hearing is something that should not be taken lightly, if not there are significant issues that can impact you down the line. There are many hearing loss symptoms that can ultimately point you to the cause in the first place. By narrowing down the cause, you can hopefully remove it entirely from your lifestyle or at the very least limit it as much as possible. By also understanding the symptoms, you will realize that what you may perceive as normal is anything but. Hearing Loss has slowly become an expectation through generations of hard working Americans. Due to the fact that certain safety protocols were never enforced, many individuals unintentionally received hearing issues. The fact is that it’s not too late for you to take the steps to protect yourself, or to at least protect whatever hearing you have left.
One of the easiest things you can do is to simply go get your hearing checked from a licensed audiologist. From there you can determine what are the next steps you should take to either protect the good hearing you still have or protect and boost whatever hearing is remaining. Trust the professionals, don’t allow your ego or emotions get in the way of the function and longevity of your hearing. Hearing and sight are one in the same. For a majority of us that are lucky enough to have both that function, it’s something that we’ve used since birth. As we’ve gotten older, it’s something that we don’t pay much attention to because it’s always there.

Listening to audio equipment at a high volume is a pretty standard and straightforward symptom. You perceive the sound to be lower than it is, therefore you jack up the volume. However when someone else enters the room they comment on the loudness of the sound setting. Another obvious one is having issues understanding people as they’re talking you, especially in loud environments like a bar or concert. This would be a difficult symptom to act on alone because even the average person with good hearing would have issues carrying on a conversation in those conditions. The infamous “mumbling” symptom is common as well. If you perceive people are always mumbling when they’re talking to you, that’s a pretty solid conclusion that there’s something amiss with your hearing. Carrying on a conversation on the phone may also prove to be an issue with hearing the person on the other end. While on the phone or elsewhere if you’re constantly asking people to repeat what they said, this may be another reason to go and get your hearing checked. If you’re mind numbingly tired after going out on the town, it may be because you were straining to hear other people. Due to this you may constantly avoid going out entirely, even though previously you may have been an extremely sociable person. Finally, the most common symptom that many with hearing issues have is what’s called tinnitus. It’s a constant ringing of the ear that’s created from the tiny hairs inside your cochlea being damaged from high sound decibels. These hairs are nonregenerative and will instead interpret bad information into your brain. You therefore perceive it as some form of high pitched ringing.
Regardless of the symptoms involved, having a simple hearing check performed can rule out any potential issues you think you may have. It may also bring issues you hadn’t seen before to the surface. Your hearing is your responsibility, so take care of it whenever you can. As mentioned above, they are one of the most exposed parts of your body and without quality protection you’re unintentionally risking lifelong issues. With that being said, hearing obviously degrades over time, but that doesn’t mean you should speed up the process by not taking care of it.
